In the creation of this site, I have incurred numerous debts – to early teachers and later colleagues, to past and present translators, and to many others. The Further Reading and Links section accompanying each translation points to the rich background to be explored in the case of individual texts and writers, and also more generally. All the sources mentioned there have helped to pave the way, not only by indicating paths to follow but – equally important – by signalling less profitable routes.

For very substantial help in the design and production of the site, it is a pleasure to acknowledge the skills and support of Peter Lynton, without whose talents it would never have appeared. Peter has developed websites and multimedia resources for a variety of clients, including Ocean Children's Centre, a website designed for easy updating by the Children's Centre staff, and Margaret McMillan Nursery School.
